Maintaining an Electric Vehicle

Perhaps the biggest benefit to driving an electric vehicle is the fact that it will require less maintenance than a gas-powered model. Without the complicated moving parts of the internal engine and the many other complex systems that pair with it, you’ll find that your electric vehicle is mostly able to sustain itself.

The main pieces of maintenance you need to take care of are typically very simple and centered around things like the tires, air filters, or windshield wipers.

Perform a Monthly Inspection

InspectionWhile it doesn’t require as much formal maintenance, there are still a few things you can keep an eye on with your vehicle to ensure you’re getting optimal performance from your Bolt.

Each month, you’ll want to check the tires to ensure they’re properly inflated and aren’t too worn down. To check how worn your tires are, you’ll want to measure the tread depth; we have a convenient trick to help with this!

Place a penny with Lincoln’s head facing downward between the treads of the tire. If his head is covered by the treads, they’re still in good condition. However, if his head is completely uncovered, you’ll want to get your tires replaced as soon as possible.

After that, you’ll also want to see that your Bolt still has enough windshield washer fluid.

Service Every 7,500 Miles

The most frequent reoccurring piece of maintenance you’ll have will come at 7,500 miles. At this point, you’ll need to get your tires rotated, so make sure to bring your vehicle to a qualified technician. This will ensure that each tire is receiving an equal amount of wear, which will prolong their lifespan and offer a smooth drive experience.

When you bring your vehicle in for the tire rotation, the technician will also check the coolant level, windshield washing fluid level, tire condition, and the brake system. They’ll also conduct a multi-point inspection to ensure all other parts of your vehicle–from the steering and suspension to the chassis–are still in good condition.

Repeating Maintenance Needs

Electric Car SerivceYou’ll have a short list of repeating maintenance needs to take care of with your Chevy Bolt. For instance, every 15,000 miles or every year you’ll want to have the front and rear wiper blades replaced.

After two years or once you pass the 22,500-mile mark, you’ll need to replace the passenger compartment air filter. However, if you’re driving in heavy traffic or similar conditions with poor air quality, you’ll likely need to replace this more frequently to keep good air quality inside your vehicle.

Every seven years, you should replace the air conditioning desiccant. And every 10 years or 75,000 miles, replace the hood and body life support gas struts. To keep the cooling system working well, make sure to drain and refill the coolant circuits at 150,000 miles.
