What Happens When My Wheels Aren’t Aligned?

Driving with misaligned wheels can be inconvenient, expensive, and dangerous. When you drive with misaligned wheels, your tires will not wear down evenly. Usually, one side or the other will wear down much quicker than the other. This uneven wear means that the tires won’t last nearly as long and will need to be replaced sooner. But that’s just the start. If your wheels are misaligned enough that you need to constantly correct course, you could be putting yourself at risk. After all, it just takes one moment of inattention to swerve into the next lane.

What Does It Mean When My Wheels Are Misaligned?

When your Chevy rolls out of the factory, its wheels are perfectly and precisely aligned. Over time, however, the camber, caster, and toe angles can come out of alignment. To get an idea of what camber means, think of looking at a car from the front or the back. If the bottom of the wheels are tilted outwards, that’s negative camber; positive camber is when the bottoms of the wheels are tilted inwards. Caster refers to how far the steering angle is from the vertical; think of the casters on a shopping cart. Finally, to get an idea of what toe means, think of looking at a car from the top. If the wheels are pointing towards each other at the front, that’s called toe-in. The opposite is called toe-out. These three angles are precisely measured—and, when one or all of them shifts from factory specifications, that means that the wheels aren’t properly aligned.

Are Alignment Inspections Important?

Though misaligned wheels can certainly cause the problems listed above, it’s not always so dramatic—and not always easy to catch. A minor misalignment may not make itself obvious at first and is easy to miss. That’s why we recommend regular alignment inspections. Our technicians can catch misaligned wheels before they become a big problem at our tire center.
