Signs You Need Exhaust System Service

• Loud Noises: When a leak develops in the exhaust system, especially if the leak develops before the muffler, it can no longer muffle the noise created by the engine. You will notice loud hissing or tapping sounds right after a leak develops.
• Exhaust Fumes: The smell of the exhaust fumes will filter up into the passenger compartment in a car. This typically happens after the crack or break increases in severity.
• Decreased Power: The engine will lose power and your car will not accelerate as fast as normal.
• Lower Mileage: Your fuel usage will increase.
• Pipes Hanging: When the pipes break apart, they will usually start to hang underneath the car and can bang against the road. The muffler and catalytic converter can also end up hanging low, too.

What Gets Inspected for an Exhaust System Service

• Exhaust Manifold: Exhaust fumes from the cylinders in the engine first move into the manifold where it is directed to the first exhaust pipe.
• Catalytic Converter: The converter absorbs many of the pollutants like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen in the fumes and emits water and carbon dioxide.
• Muffler: The muffler uses chambers and insulation to reduce the sound coming from the engine.
• Exhaust Pipes: The stainless steel pipes connect all the major parts of the exhaust system together.
• Hardware: The exhaust system uses clamps, bolts, and washers to connect everything together and hold the system to the underside of your car.
