Local Spotlight: The Davies Project

Driving

Organizations like The Davies Project are integral to communities like ours. In this local spotlight, we want to shine a light on the important work this organization is doing to enhance the lives of sick children and their families. Read ahead to learn more!

What They Do

Since its foundation in 2014, The Davies Project has been providing “community-based, non-medical support for local families facing serious, long-term health challenges with a child.” It started out with providing rides to and from critical doctor’s appointments for children with serious health conditions, pregnant women, and parents with a baby in the NICU.

Their original mission has grown to include emotional support for the families that use their services. The relationships built between the drivers and the families is having a positive impact on the lives of all parties involved with the projects.

Why They Do It

DrivingThe importance of this organization is simple: “Free rides means fewer missed appointments and healthier kids.” Without reliable transportation, important, and sometimes critical, appointments can be missed, which has the opportunity to drastically change the course of a person’s life.

Did you know that lack of transportation contributes to an average 60% missed appointment rate for chronically ill children in the Greater Lansing area? The Davies Project saw the need and rose up to the task of preventing missed appointments solely because of lack of transportation.

At any given time, they’re working with a robust 70-person network of driving volunteers. Drivers are typically paired with a family for the long haul. Six years of maintaining this policy has shown that these relationships are key when it comes to getting proper care.

How You Can Help

The Davies Project has become what it is today because of the many passionate and dedicated volunteers that donate time and effort to the cause. Make a difference in your community by getting involved with The Davies Project as a volunteer driver or an administrative volunteer.
