What is Stabilitrak?

First things first, let’s get familiar with the Stabilitrak system and the role it plays in the safety of your Chevrolet Equinox.

Stabilitrak is a sophisticated electronic stability control system designed to help drivers maintain control of their vehicles in challenging driving conditions. This system constantly monitors the vehicle's steering input and direction, along with the vehicle's lateral acceleration and rotation rate. Suppose it detects that the vehicle is veering off its intended path or losing traction. In that case, Stabilitrak intervenes by selectively applying brakes to individual wheels and adjusting engine power to assist in keeping the vehicle on course. Essentially, Stabilitrak helps prevent skidding and sliding, especially on slippery or uneven road surfaces, enhancing overall stability and safety while driving your Chevrolet Equinox.

Keeping your Stabilitrak system running smoothly is key to safe everyday adventures. So, if you ever feel the traction or stability of your Chevrolet Equinox is at risk, be sure to have your Stabilitrak system inspected as soon as possible.

How to Know if You Have a Problem with Stabilitrak

If you have problems with your Stabilitrak system, it can be a symptom of several different issues. When it’s not functioning properly, you might notice a difference in the way your vehicle shifts gears, or you may find that your vehicle has lost power.

You should also see a dashboard light that looks like a vehicle with curved tire marks behind it. This light lets you know key information about the Stabilitrak system. Whenever you start the vehicle, it should appear briefly to let you know that it’s functioning. Then, if you turn Stabilitrak off, you’ll see the same symbol with the word OFF below it.

When there’s a problem with the Stabilitrak system, you’ll likely receive a message about it in the Driver Information Center as well as see the Stabilitrak dashboard light turn on and stay on.

If this happens, you can try stopping the vehicle, turning it off for 15 seconds, and restarting the engine. Once you start driving again, check to see if the light is still on and if you have any new notifications in the Driver Information Center. If you do, you can technically keep driving with it, but you’ll want to make an appointment with our service center to get the problem diagnosed as soon as possible.
